Electronic Manufacturing Committee… Deepening electronic manufacturing locally
The Electronic Manufacturing Committee of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has identified 5 main industries to be part of a strategy to deepen the electronics industry locally. The implementation of the first phase of this strategy began in 2017 and will continue for another two years with investments estimated at about 361 million pounds, including the following industries:
1- The manufacture of portable devices “tablet – mobile” and “GPS” devices, which are the most prominent manufacturing axes that Egypt is working to develop during the coming period, especially since they exist but in a limited way.
2- The manufacture of LED bulbs, which has turned into an electronic industry, as the electronic components in LED bulbs represent between 75 and 80% of the bulb. It is a promising industry, especially with the possibility of manufacturing it locally with local components at a rate ranging between 70 and 80%, especially since it has become a national project within the framework of the government’s orientation towards rationalizing energy consumption.
3- The manufacture of television screens, which is considered one of the main industries in the Ministry of Communications’ plan to stimulate local electronic manufacturing, especially since it exists in a limited way through the Samsung factory in Beni Suef, and exists in an assembly manner through some other local factories. The plan aims to deepen the screen industry in Egypt and create a broad base of industries that feed the screen industry.
4- The manufacture of solar energy generation equipment supplies, which is among the promising industries, and is considered an investment opportunity because relying on alternative energy solutions is also a national project. The Ministry’s plan aims to penetrate the activity of manufacturing solar panels, not just assembling them, as well as electrical transformers and control devices.
5- The manufacture of smart electricity meters, which allows electricity companies to control electricity consumption and work on collecting and analyzing consumption data.
The Electronics Research Institute, affiliated with the Ministry of Scientific Research in Egypt, leads an alliance that includes a number of companies and institutions working in this field and the Communications Association, as a representative of communications and information technology companies, to manufacture electronics in Egypt.
